A Planting Calendar for Istanbul Gardens: What to Plant, and When
The best times to plant trees, shrubs, lawns and seasonal flowers in Istanbul’s climate, and what to watch out for.
Planting the right plant at the right time is the key to a trouble-free first year. Istanbul’s mild, humid climate suits a wide range of plants, but timing still depends on the type of plant.
Autumn: the best season for trees and shrubs
October and November are generally the best months to plant trees and shrubs. The soil is still warm and the rains have started, so plants develop roots over winter and get off to a strong start in spring. Bare-root stock is planted during winter dormancy, whenever the ground is not frozen.
Spring: plants that love warmth
From late March to May is the time for more cold-sensitive species such as palms and olives, and for seasonal plants that will flower through summer. Wait until the risk of late frost has passed.
Sowing a lawn
There are two windows for lawns: early autumn (September–October) and spring (April–May). Autumn sowing is often preferred because it gives the grass more time to root before summer heat. Ready-made turf can be laid for most of the year, except in extreme heat or frost.
Container-grown plants
Container-grown plants can be planted in most seasons, but those planted in the hottest weeks of summer need more frequent watering. If you plant then, choose early morning or evening.
After planting
Regular, deep watering in the first year is critical for roots to establish. Mulch (bark, gravel, etc.) retains moisture and reduces weeds. An automatic irrigation system makes this period much easier.
